Halloween may sometimes seem to be taken over by darkness and a reverence for death, but just as Jesus did, we can take what's broken and make it beautiful.
Genesis 50:20 says, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."
Isaiah 61 is our Savior speaking:
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to [a]heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To [b]console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins,
They shall raise up the former desolations,
And they shall repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to [a]heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To [b]console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins,
They shall raise up the former desolations,
And they shall repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
Here's some ideas:
As trick or treaters and their families come to your door, your candy can be wrapped in one of the cutout leaves or pumpkins in the attachment. The leaves and pumpkins have a Bible verse that tells them of God's love and Jesus' sacrifice. The verses I included are short -- they won't be able to help but read the whole thing. Then, there's truth planted in their thoughts for them to think about.
Pray over the candy and attached verses before trick or treating begins. Pray that those who receive the truth will have hearts opened to receive truth, and that they will have a burden to know more of God's love through Jesus. Pray that God makes a way for you or someone in their life to cross their path and guide them to the Bible. Pray that every person you see Halloween night will come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Pray God will remind you how you are equipped to continue to carry the Gospel out throughout your neighborhood.
For the past couple of years, we have used the plastic goody bags from the dollar store to fill with candy and a Bible verse. When the cutouts are colored or decorated, they look pretty turned outward in the plastic bags.
Another idea is to simply tape the cutouts on pieces of candy.
However you and your family and friends decide to use the cutouts to share the gospel, your children should be made aware that they are partaking in the Great Commission: "Go and make disciples of all nations." (Matthew 28:16-20).
The attachment includes four 10 x 8 printables:
- First page is colorful leaves with Bible verses.
- Second page is pumpkins with Bible verses.
- Third and fourth page are blank leaves and pumpkins for you and you children to add verses you would like to share, color, and decorate.
Have a blessed Halloween!
